The purpose of this Delta ring for the S&W M&P 15-22 is to retain any AR-15 type 2 piece hand guard so you can match the 15-22 to your standard AR. It also maintains tension to prevent the hand guard from becoming loose. Tension comes from the weld spring, which is the wavy metal piece behind the Delta ring. Then the Delta ring and weld spring are held in place by the snap ring that fits in a groove in the barrel nut.
